Getting a PhD Degree: Consider Two Sides of a Coin

For some reason, everything in our world has two sides. Education turns out to be not an exception. In this article, let us discuss two sides of the general opinion which can be formulated as follows: the more you study, the better your career is. Heads of a Coin Employers expect that PhD graduates have broad background in their field of study and, besides, are great specialists in a field which they investigated. Besides, PhD graduates are expected to be intelligent, to have strong analytical, critical thinking and writing skills. A PhD degree is an entrance door to academic career. However, many PhD graduates build career beyond this field. There are special services that specialize in offering jobs to PhDs. To analyze demand for PhD graduates, you may visit their sites and look at their offers. Tails of a Coin Nowadays discussion of PhD has got a reverse side. It is often stated that educational system works ineffectively, and the phenomenon of PhD does not always fulfill its functions appropriately. First of all, you risk falling into a certain gap which appears between two worlds: an “inner world” of PhD where you study, carry out a specific research and hardly worry about matters beyond this area, and an “outer world”, where your career and professional responsibilities set other requirements to you. Secondly, it is important to consider the situation in the scientific labor market. For example, according to Science & Engineering Indicators 2008, supply exceeded demand three times. Finally, the level of academic salaries is much lower than that in the industry, which also cannot be ignored. If you have any hesitations about PhD at the moment, we advice you sincerely to evaluate all the pros and cons one more time and make a decision which you will later enjoy.
