Should I Take Regular College Classes or Online (Distance Learning) Classes?

Today, students have a variety of options available to them when they are ready to obtain an college degree (whether undergraduate or graduate); and they all distill down to two primary choices, traditional and distance learning. Most traditional colleges, meaning the brick and mortar variety, offer a wide array of scheduling choices to students whose personal and professional lives will not allow them to lead the classic full-time student lifestyle. There are now a wide variety of scheduling options, as well as tracks that allow non-traditional (also called returning) students the ability to go to school on a part-time basis and still be on target to obtain their degree.

At the same time, there is also a greatly expanding range of distance learning options. At this point, almost any degree can be obtained online, and almost any individual class can be taken online, which allows both traditional and non-traditional students the ability to have a great deal of flexibility in their educational schedules. Because of this, online classes are increasingly popular among all sorts of students.

However, this flexibility can be misleading! It is not the case that students can just do their work whenever they want to, handing things in how they feel like it. For example, distance learning classes have discussion forums to which students are required to post discussion responses, usually several times a week, and professors check to make sure that students are interacting with each other. They also have group, or team, projects which require students to coordinate schedules and piece together projects ranging from power-point presentations to term papers to business plans. They also have a strictly-scheduled series of individual assignments including journal reflections and research papers.

Also, distance learning classes only last a few weeks, while traditional classes generally run 16 weeks. This is something else to consider. If you get bored quickly, distance learning options might work better for you. If you are a slow starter, online classes will not work too well.

There are lots of other factors to consider also. Do you live near a traditional college or university, one you would want to attend? If not, then your choice is rather clear, as driving long distances is definitely not cost-effective anymore. Your second consideration at that point would be your life. Do you have a rigidly-scheduled job, a family, volunteer responsibilities, and other things that would make sitting in class several nights a week too hard?

A third consideration is cost. Although distance learning is certainly not free, online classes can definitely be less expensive than brick-and-mortar classes. Finally, think about your personality. Are you self-disciplined enough to check in with your online class every single day, do what you have to do, and meet your deadlines? Do you enjoy a good face-to-face conversation with your peers or would you prefer to remain more anonymous in your scholarly pursuits?

All of these factors and more should be taken into account when considering which option is best for you (distance learning or traditional classes). Either way, remember that there is help if you need it, from a good, solid academic writing and research company. Just make sure you choose one that can assist you regardless of what kind of classes you decide to take.

Distance Learning: Promises, Problems, and Possibilities

Distance learning and its relationship to emerging computer technologies have together offered many promises to the field of education. In practice however, the combination often falls short of what it attempts to accomplish. Some of the shortcomings are due to problems with the technology; others have more to do with administration, instructional methods, or students. Despite the problems, many users like technologies such as compressed video and see continued growth in the area.

Personal Identity

Weirob faults Miller’s argument that personal identity depends on the identity of immaterial unobservable souls because of several reasons. This view, dualism, proposes that persons are Cartesian minds-souls that can exist without bodies and survive death. It further explains that, person X at a specific time (ta ) is identical to person Y at a different time ( tb ) if and only if X has (or is) the same soul at ta that Y has at tb.
