Do You Know When to Get Career Advice?

Career Counseling

Career plays an important role in every individual’s life. Education and many other factors shape the way your career moves forward. Career counseling is the other factor that has a dominant role. Learn more about career counseling.

Career CounselingNumerous opportunities have evolved in various domains over a period of time. Individuals have a wide choice when it comes to choosing the career of their choice. At the same time, a wide choice leads to confusion and people need help in choosing the right career that fits their interests, skills and personality. You can take the advice of a career consultant or career counselor to understand which field or domain you may choose based on your skills and personality to have a successful career.

Career counseling is a vast niche field that involves helping individuals to choose the right career option based on their individual interests, personality, skills and values. People who practice career counseling are known as career counselors or career counseling advisers. Career counseling comprises of career placement, career planning, learning strategies and student development.

Personality Evaluation

Some preliminary tests are conducted by career counselors to understand your psyche or personality. These tests comprise of various questions that will help the counselor understand your area of interest, skills, values and what kind of career excites you. There is no right or wrong answer in such tests; it is only a method of expressing your individuality.

Various types of career tests that determine your interests, personality, motivational factors and your aptitude help the counselor gain a better understanding of your career interests that may not be explicit. Each test is designed to provide them with the appropriate information so that they can give feedback that ensures you choose the ideal career and achieve career success.

Personality tests are the most common test used to specifically determine your inclination for a certain type of occupation or career. Such tests focus on the psychological aspects of an individual and measure your personal characteristics, emotional makeup and stability. It can also help you self-evaluate yourself and understand where you stand in the career planning process.

Intelligence Quotient

Depending on the choice of career you make, you also need to evaluate your IQ also known as Intelligence Quotient. Intelligence tests determine how smart you are, which is a prime indicator of your analytical skills, logical thinking and of course intelligence! Every organization looks for a smart worker rather than a hard worker as an employee. A smart or intelligent employee adds a lot of value to the organization by channelizing his/her individual objective towards the larger interests of the organization.

The Best Fit!

Career counseling primarily involves identifying the potential in an individual and mapping the same to an appropriate career or occupation in order to leverage the individual’s skills towards building a successful career. To put it simply, it is the process of finding the best fit and to make an informed career choice that suits an individual’s personality and skills. For example, an extrovert who can get along with people very easily can excel at a job that involves meeting and interacting with people. S/he can work very well in a team/ group. Alternately, an individual with an analytical mind who is good with numbers can excel in a banking job or any job that involves analysis and interpretation of financial data.

If you are someone who loves meeting different kinds of people and are good at analyzing and judging a person to a certain extent, and more importantly, can provide unbiased feedback and advice to individuals you can become a career counselor. Additionally, it is essential that you have a deep understanding of the dynamics of various domains and the current requirements in every industry in order to help aspiring freshers to shape themselves accordingly.

It is generally observed that individuals excel at something when they do it with a passion. It is vital that you enjoy what you do on a daily basis to perform well. The best way to choose your career is to speak to a career counselor to understand your strong points and to pursue your career in that direction. An informed decision is the best decision. Wishing you a very successful career and a job that you are happy doing!

Support During Career Transition: Keeping Upbeat and Focused

Certified Career Coach Hallie Crawford offers practical advice and tips on how best to get support during your career transition.

Do you sometimes find that as soon as you take that leap and decide to make a positive career change, you’re met with criticism and resistance from those around you? They tell you why it’s a bad idea and try to persuade you not to follow your dream.

Luckily, it only seems that way. One of the biggest challenges that many people in career transition face is trying to convince their families, friends, coworkers and the people who know them best that change is a good thing. At a time when everything is in flux, it’s tough for us to reassure people we are headed on the path to success despite any obstacles which may surface along the way. We may even be uncertain ourselves! And because we frequently experience the most resistance to our ideas from the people who mean the most to us, it can FEEL like our core support system is caving in. But don’t worry, I assure you it’s not!

As a certified career coach who has helped many people overcome obstacles and who has paved the way for my own career, I make sure my clients know where to find the best type of career support, at the time when they need it most. Here are five sources where you can seek out guidance, education — even commiseration!– during your career transition period.

1. Career networking - both online and in person.

There are tons of career-focused networks and resources on the internet and in your local area. To locate them online, do a Google search. Check out your home town paper to find out where the best career focused communities are hiding. Go out and mingle with like-minded professionals who are seeking a change in their own careers or who are currently in the career you want to pursue. Participate in workshops, contact your college alumni office or attend a networking event. The information is there for the taking, all you have to do is seek and you shall find.

2. Individual career coaching.

On my site, HallieCrawford.com, I offer what is known as Co-Active Coaching - a style of coaching that empowers the career seeker to find the right answers on their own and navigate their career course in a way that feels right for them alone. A good coach will never just hand you instructions, but is there instead to offer expert advice, an objective viewpoint, positive encouragement and suggestions to help manage your goals effectively, in a manner that works for you.

3. A career seeking buddy.

Sometimes it isn’t easy being that "horse of a different color" in your group of friends. If everyone you know is consumed with their corporate job but you have a strong urge to strike out on your own, you may get some resistance from those who can’t relate or are fearful you might be making a mistake. The solution is not to try to persuade the naysayers, but instead seek like-minded people or a supportive friend to commiserate with, share experiences with, and bounce ideas off of. It’s so important to feel like you have someone who understands what you’re going through during the sometimes unpredictable yet exhilarating career transition time. You can find a career seeking buddy by following up with some of the other points in this article–for example, visiting online and in-person networks where career seekers converge, taking a career education course or career teleclass and reaching out to classmates, or even asking your career coach to introduce you to others in her circle of contacts.

4. A mentor or someone who has "been there."

Is there someone in your life who you admire because they didn’t follow the status quo, created their own path or just seem to be living out an amazingly full and satisfying life and career? Maybe you have a friend, relative, or acquaintance who started their own business or managed to interweave creativity and flexibility into their professional life in a way that stands out from the crowd. Now is a perfect time to ask for advice and guidance from that person, listen to their story, learn from their mistakes, and apply this knowledge to the changes that you’re going through in your own career. Most people are more than happy to share what they have learned. The experience is sure to be enlightening and you will be making a friend and professional contact in the process.

5. Career education courses.

Newspapers, career publications, public libraries, online career resources and even my career website, HallieCrawford.com, are all great places to discover reasonably-priced career education and transition courses. Become armed with the knowledge needed to begin your journey on the path to a more fulfilling career. I myself offer a terrific and inspiring Career Seekers Teleclass that’s held several times per year. It’s a fantastic support program for those who are interested in coaching but either aren’t ready to invest in individual coaching just yet, or really like the idea of participating in a group where others are going through the same thing you are. For more information, visit my website at the bottom of this article.

professional careersWhen you’re striving for a positive change in your life, the goal is to seek out experiences and people that help you pursue that goal, enhance your knowledge, and offer positive feedback. It’s understandable that our human support group won’t always exist in the places where we’re used to having it… but help is out there. I have confidence that you will receive the guidance and understanding you need to move forward with your dream of the ultimate career for you. Good luck!

Online Education can get Your Career Into Shape

Get Your Career In Shape - The Easy Way

Lots of people went through higher education almost by default. Many of us didn’t really want to be there at the time. There’s often peer pressure to cope with, irksome daily travel, and classes that just make our eyes glaze over. Worst of all these days, it’s very costly. Most graduates, for instance, emerge from university with a shed-load of debt to go with their degree.

Going back to a conventional educational establishment after a long break probably doesn’t look very appealing. Well, the good news is that you can still acquire new skills and qualifications without having to do that. You can study the easy way: through distance learning.

Distance learning, which is usually home learning, has lots of advantages. You can fit your home study around your lifestyle. It’s modular, so you can learn at your own pace. Obviously, there’s no travel to worry about - apart from the travel into the room wherever your computer is set up! And the classes are far from boring, because you select them yourself.

Home learning is structured but flexible. You get all the support you need from qualified and experienced home study tutors, who assess your progress regularly and provide all the encouragement you need to move on to the next level.

With distance learning, you can literally study anywhere you want. The only requirement is that your study centre is connected to the Internet, which is not likely to be much of a stumbling block these days. Good home learning centres make it as easy as possible for you to study. They’ll send you all the course material you need, and you can send in your assignments by post or email.

online special education degreesWhat’s particularly great about home learning is that your bank balance doesn’t have to suffer. Most home study courses are affordable, and many offer easy payment plans. And of course, you don’t need to get into debt to do them, because you don’t have to give up your day job; you can study in your spare time, in the evenings, at weekends, on holiday, even during train or air trips. You literally learn while you earn.

Home learning can be a great way to add to your qualifications. Most bosses would be impressed if you went to them and told them that you’d broadened your skill set in your own time and at your own expense. Home study also offers a fantastic opportunity to change careers by acquiring new qualifications in a different field. The job market is always changing, and it’s never too late to change with it. And if you choose the home learning route, it really couldn’t be easier.

Manage Your Career

How You Can Manage Your Career Goal Setting Plans

One of the most important and hardest decisions regarding making career choices or setting business goals is to figure out what you want to achieve in life. Choosing a career path is one of the most important goals you may have in mind for your life.

Often, choosing a career path is one of the most important goals you may have in mind for your life. Not only does it help you sustain your livelihood, but also makes it possible for you to achieve various goals you may have set for yourself, such as buying your first home or taking a vacation around the world.

Setting Career Goals

One of the most important and hardest decisions regarding making career choices or setting business goals is to figure out what you want to achieve in life. Even though you may think you know what you want to do, these desires could change with every passing moment. You never know when you finally discover that hidden talent that’s been waiting to come out. You never know when you will be introduced to something that will change your life, as well as views on what the future may hold for you. Most often, these new experiences open doors to career opportunities you may have never noticed before.

When it comes to planning a career and setting goals, having focus will take you farther. When individuals work with a clear head, they can set out to achieve their desires, which tends to result in a better outcome. For those trying to manage their career goals, you might want to decide on a couple of factors before embarking on the adventure of making and taking control over career plans for the future. You may also have to dig deep to assess your career desires and goals. For some, this is a truly uplifting process that has individuals searching their soul for answers.

Money Matters

One of the most important aspects of setting career goals deals with the monetary gain you stand to recoup from your employment efforts. For some, a switch in career-oriented goals comes from dissatisfaction in the amount of money one is making. Asking yourself how much money you wish to earn will assist you in pinpointing career goals that will help you achieve your financial desires.

At the present time, are you satisfied with the amount of money you make; do you need more to achieve additional personal plans? For some, money doesn’t even matter and the joy of working in a particular field is enough to provide happiness and complete them as an employee.

Job Satisfaction

Are you happy with the type of job you currently have? Do you find pleasure in the tasks you are responsible for and the skills you are able to use? When going to work, are you whistling a happy tune or dreading the 7-9 hours you may spend in the workplace. Sometimes there are other career paths you could follow that will bring you an increased level of satisfaction and happiness. Are you willing to make the switch?

For some, switching careers will increase job happiness while others feel they have hit a brick wall in the workplace and might need to advance within the ranks. These are the people who set their eyes on career goals, such as obtaining a raise, gaining a promotion or receiving a higher title within the company. Perhaps you are simply unhappy with your work setting and job description and wish to change careers altogether. Ask yourself why you work where you do and does it fulfill all or most of your needs?

online education psychologyCareer Analysis: Sometimes there are barriers or reasons why you are not rising in the ranks within your company. Many individuals are passed up for promotions despite a glowing resume or outstanding qualifications. Office politics, discrimination and favoritism are some of the common reasons some employees are unable to achieve the career goals they have set for themselves.

When it isn’t beneficial to fight against these injustices and inequalities, some people have found it much easier to make a career move. But sometimes it will not help your current standing to leave a job. Common reasons include convenient location, great benefits, various perks for long service or no job lined up to take its place.
